Naming places

VICNAMES is the state’s official Register of Geographic Names.

It contains more than 200,000 place names including towns, cities, suburbs and regions, roads, landscape features, recreational reserves, transport stations, schools, hospitals, national parks, forest reserves and tracks. It is free to search for a place or road name, propose a place name and add historical information.

The Registrar of Geographic Names is responsible for recording place names, maintains VICNAMES, and heads the Office of Geographic Names. For the latest information from the office see news and current projects.
