Vicmap Published Online Index
Explanation of the numbering system The whole of Australia is first divided (using geographic latitude and longitude lines) into 1:100,000 scale mapsheets, each with a four digit reference number. The first two digits are an east-west vector. (00 is way over in Western Australia) The last two digits are a north-south vector. (00 is down in Tasmania). Statewide image Victoria is covered by a range of 71-88 east-west, and in the range of 19-29 north-south 50K quadrants Next, each of these sheets is split into four 1:50,000 sheets (quadrants), numbered 1 to 4 counterclockwise, starting from the top right corner. The reference number of one of these sheets is the 1:100,000 number, a dash or point, then the 1:50,000 quadrant number. e.g. 8024-1 Finally, these sheets are split into four 1:25,000 sheets, similarly numbered 1-4. The reference number is the 1:100,000 number, a dash or dot, the 1:50,000 quadrant number, a dash or dot, then the 1:25,000 quadrant number. e.g. 8024-1-4 Projections, Datums and Formats The series was originally designed for paper, using a Transverse Mercator projection, but the mapsheet borders were defined by geographic latitude and longitude lines. Each single format mapsheet is 7˝ minutes wide, and 7˝minutes high, for example 8124-1-2. Some sheets are published a double format sheets (eg. 8123-1-N), and some are actually published at 1:50,000 quadruple format (eg. 8223-N). Currency of each mapsheet The series was produced between 1974 to 1996. Future Directions All Vicmap Published map printed in the future will be to the GDA datum. The next mapsheet to be printed will be Eldorado 8225-3-4. Feedback We value your feedback. Please email: vicmap.info@dse.vic.gov.au with any comments or questions.
