Vicmap Features of Interest
Introduction
Victoria’s features of interest database
Vicmap Features of interest assist users in asset management, web based search and find, dispatch, delivery and routing, and map production.
Spatial Information Infrastructure will provide a dynamic database of features and sub features such as education centres, community centres, care & emergency facilities, power lines, power facilities, locality points, towers and landmarks. A Vicmap feature catalogue has been developed to complement this database. Key customers are utilities, a broad variety of business, government departments and agencies and the emergency services.
Currently happening
The data model has been built, the product constructed and tested. SII is seeking through the Custodianship Program authoritative data to populate the new products Features and Sub-features.
SII will provide updates periodically via Vicmap Bulletins.
Key features of the database
- hold locations and describe the feature
- allow for complex parent / child relationships e.g. University / Campus, Reserves / Oval
- state the data’s authority and provide linkages to other databases eg. Vicmap Address, the Authority’s identifier
- all features have the same data structure.
See the proposed attributes as at 11 March 2009. Vicmap Features of Interest Data Proposed Attributes 11032009 (PDF - 14 KB)

- allows all features to be appended into a single database
- enhance search and find capability
- allow for efficient and effective database management
- links to the Geographic Names Register, Vicmap Address and other authoritative registers.

How complete is the available data?
Many sub features have a minimum of 50% 'completeness' regarding coverage, attribution and spatial content. This table indicates indicative completeness of each available feature and sub feature.
The full description of 'completenesss' is included in the Product Description.

The following Vicmap feature catalogue as at 2 June 2009, includes other features and sub features being sought. The intent is that this catalogue become a standard for feature terminology within industry and an important tool to improve exchange of information. The terminology used in this catalogue has been well researched.
