Road Names

It is important to note that the process for road and street naming differs to that of feature naming.

The naming of roads and streets is a local government responsibility under the Local Government Act 1989 and Schedule 10 of the Act provides that this should be done in accordance with the Guidelines for Geographic Names Victoria.

The VICNAMES website does not allow changes to road and street names to be made online. Currently, the process for assigning or altering road names is done by completing a Road Name Maintenance Form and attaching evidence of council endorsement for the name along with a map or plan on which the subject road has been depicted and can be identified.

To check the status of a proposed road name change or addition refer to current proposals.

For more information about road/street naming, please refer to Section 4.47 of the Guidelines.
