Naming Places in Victoria
Naming places is something Victorians are passionate about. Whether it's a street, suburb, school, stadium or shopping centre, names connect places to their local community.
In Victoria, the Geographic Place Names Act 1998 is the legislation that covers the naming of places and the registration of place names. The principles, policies and procedures for naming places are set out in the Guidelines for Geographic Names Victoria (October 2004). Local councils are Victoria's main naming authorities, but anyone can initiate a proposal to name or rename a place or road.
