Guidelines for Geographic Names in Victoria, October 2004

The Guidelines for Geographic Names (October 2004) include the principles, policies and procedures to inform and support naming authorities who are responsible for the naming of geographical places and features.

The guidelines:

  • set out process to be followed before selecting or assigning an Indigenous place name,
  • specify criteria for the assignment of cultural, heritage or other significance in relation to the naming of places,
  • set out requirements for consultation before a name of a place is selected, assigned or amended, and
  • specify any other matter or thing appropriate in relation to the naming of places.

Please note that the Department of Education and Training has recently amended its Guidelines for the Naming and Renaming of Schools. The amended school naming guidelines establish the Department of Education and Training as the coordinating naming authority for schools. Local councils will now be consulted and invited to comment on any school naming proposal, but are no longer required to coordinate the naming process.
