The VICNAMES website, originally established in 2004, was redesigned in March 2008 to incorporate more search features for naming authorities and now has the capacity to include historical information on place names; a function not previously available.

VICNAMES assists naming authorities to register new or altered geographic naming proposals. The core of the original site was a registration process designed to maximise the advantages of an electronic environment. The redeveloped VICNAMES offers the same flexibility, but improvements in the search features, plus the ability to record historical information, makes the Register an even more useful website.

User Guide
This user guide details how you can operate the VICNAMES website to search for, or upload, place names information and describes how you can participate in the naming process as per the Geographic Place Names Act 1998 and the supporting Guidelines for Geographic Names (October 2004).
