The Victorian Registrar of Titles is inviting public feedback on how personal information is accessed through the Register of land.

The Register is the official record of land ownership in Victoria. It includes the names and addresses of property owners. This information is considered personal information under the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014.

The Register is, and always has been, public. Being able to search it is fundamental to efficient property transactions in Victoria.

However, the Registrar also receives requests from people who want their personal information removed from public access. The Transfer of Land Act 1958 does not allow this information to be suppressed, and the Registrar is not proposing any changes to this law.

Instead, the Registrar is seeking feedback on whether the Register should continue to be fully searchable, or whether access to personal information should be limited in some way.

To support this discussion, a consultation paper has been released. It explains possible options for changing how people can search the Register.

The Victorian community and stakeholders are encouraged to review the paper and share their views.

You can read the consultation paper, and find out how to make a submission on the Engage Victoria website: engage.vic.gov.au/protecting-your-privacy-in-the-register-of-land

The closing date to provide feedback is 11:59 pm on 31 July 2026.
