Reminder: public consultation on protecting privacy in the Register of land

Land Registry Services (LRS) reminds you that public consultation is open on proposals to better protect privacy in the Register of land.

Have your say by 31 July 2026

As outlined in Customer Information Bulletin (CIB) 241, the consultation seeks feedback from customers, industry and the community on options to strengthen privacy protections while maintaining appropriate access to land information.

The Register of land supports Victoria’s property system by recording important information about land ownership and interests in land. Consultation feedback will help inform how privacy can be protected in a way that continues to support transparency, confidence and the effective operation of the land registration system.

Customers are encouraged to review the consultation information and provide feedback before the consultation closes on 31 July 2026.

For further information and to provide feedback, visit the Engage Victoria website at engage.vic.gov.au/protecting-your-privacy-in-the-register-of-land.

Dealing Requirement Reminder: Retain Evidence When Selecting Consent of Caveator

LRS reminds customers that they must obtain and retain appropriate evidence when they select the dealing requirement “Consent of Caveator, if required” in Lodgement Instructions.

Where this dealing requirement is selected, the Registrar will rely on the Subscriber’s certification that caveator consent has been obtained, where required. As advised in CIB 187, the Registrar will not issue a notice to the caveator under section 90(1) of the Transfer of Land Act 1958 and will not require the consent to be produced at lodgment.

Selecting this dealing requirement does not remove Subscribers’ obligation to hold the necessary supporting evidence. Subscribers must retain evidence of caveator consent, where required, as LRS may request this evidence for compliance purposes.
