The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning is making it easier to access the most-up-to-date Victorian foundational spatial data with the new Vicmap as a Service (VaaS).

For the first time, VaaS enables users to access Victorian foundational spatial data in the cloud via web services and APIs, as an alternative to traditional methods such as downloads and file transfer.

With VaaS, customers can seamlessly integrate their spatial infrastructure with Vicmap and access near real-time data.

Machine-to-machine interoperability has consistently been the most requested service enhancement by Vicmap customers, and is a key objective in DELWP’s Core Spatial Services Strategy 2018-2023.

VaaS now makes this possible for Vicmap customers, delivering standardised and contemporary data services via the ESRI ArcGIS Online platform. Most Vicmap data products can be accessed via highly scalable and easily consumable REST services and web feature services (WFS) via APIs.

VaaS provides an alternative to downloading the datasets, storing versions and uploading into your own business databases.

Vicmap products are continuously maintained, with new updates available as often as weekly. Using APIs is an easy and convenient way for customers who regularly require these dynamic datasets to access the most current version.

VaaS also allows you to consume just the data you need, when you need it, rather than downloading the entire dataset. This can mean significant efficiency savings to systems and processes, especially for customers using large volumes of Vicmap data.

Future releases of VaaS will see the delivery of incremental updates of Vicmap via web services, the ability to query and retrieve historic Vicmap data and the launch of Vicmap vector tile basemaps.

Vicmap is Victoria’s authoritative state-wide suite of foundational spatial data accessed more than 100 million times a year across our platforms.
